Bluetooth 5.1 Direction Finding

How Angle of Arrival Works

Angle of Arrival (AoA) technology was introduced to Bluetooth Low Energy with the Bluetooth 5.1 Core Specification, specifically for direction-finding purposes. It delivers significantly higher location accuracy than traditional Received Signal Strength Indication (RSSI) methods — enabling the sub-metre precision that demanding industrial environments require.

Single-Antenna Tag Transmission

The BLE tag — the device whose direction is being determined — transmits a dedicated direction-finding signal using a single antenna. This keeps tags compact, low-power and cost-effective.

Multi-Antenna Locator Array

The AoA locator (anchor) receives the signal through a multi-antenna array. As the transmitted signal crosses the array, each antenna sees a slightly different signal phase due to its unique distance from the transmitting tag.

IQ Sampling & Phase Analysis

The locator takes IQ (in-phase and quadrature) samples of the signal while rapidly switching between the active antenna in the array. This captures the phase difference data across the full antenna set.

Direction Calculation

Using the IQ sample data, the locator calculates the relative signal direction with high precision. Multiple locators triangulate this into an accurate 2D or 3D position on your facility floor plan.
